About the Website
This website is about AMERICAN POLITICS and trying to understand the odd polarized, partisan state we find it in right now. It started as a film promo but it's really part blog, part voting analysis, part Internet political resource, and part political chat room.
The media narrative of RED vs. BLUE and now a unified PURPLE is mostly wrong. If you want to get a clearer picture of what's really happening, look around the site, check out the video shorts, check out some of the voting data and join the conversation.
The point of the website is to engage YOU, the voter, in our investigation of the political divisions across the country. Our intent is to contribute to a greater understanding among opposing political opinions because what we've found in our interviews is that voters know little about the "other" and the vacuum has been filled in by crude, self-serving, and often funny stereotypes. Our cultural elite hasn't helped much here as they've mostly reinforced these stereotypes.
There's nothing truly threatening about political conflict and, in fact, our system of democracy thrives on it. We encourage it here. But the point of engaging conflict is to find a resolution. The problem with partisan polarization is that people have stopped talking to the opposition while also trying to beat that opposition into submission. It's liberals against conservatives and Republicans against Democrats in a biennial horserace that has turned our political process into an endless campaign. This has only led to a breakdown of the democratic process and caused deep frustration among many citizens. (Just think of the growing popular appeal of Barack Obama's campaign oratory for unity.
